It discusses Kenneth Waltz's Man, the State, and War. Pulitzer Prize-winning The Story of Civilization is, shockingly, currently out of print — but I would also list Kenneth Waltz whose Man, The State , And War (1959) remains one of the foundation texts of International Relations. I was wondering if he was actually going to utter the wor. This book cover would never fly today—mainly cuz it's mainly white! Waltz's argument stems directly from the logic of nuclear deterrence and the balance of power, a concept he reinvigorated in his seminal text "Man, the State, and War". Spinoza linked conflict causally to man's imperfect reason. His two seminal works are "Man, the State and War" and "A Theory of International Relations". Waltz's “one big thing” was to view international politics in terms of structure, whether defined as the anarchy of the international system (in Man, the State and War) or its polarity (in Theory of International Relations). One might think its strange to do a book review on a work published over 40 years ago, but too bad, I just finished Kenneth Waltz's 'Man, the State, and War' two days ago, so deal with it! The second is excellent if you happen to like political theory. The first is excellent by any measure.
